The area, at its smallest point, starts 11 miles off Long Beach, NY. It widens and moves away from that spot, to approximately 19 miles away(see map). This area will be just barely visible from shore on clear days. The turbines should appear shorter and many times less wide than the majority of tanker and cargo ships that continuously sit off Long Beach on any given day.
Due to multiple inquiries of interest to develop the wind farm, BOEM has opened up the area for competitive bidding and is seeking public input on two issues that may impact future wind development offshore New York:
1) a liquefied natural gas facility that has now been proposed to be located in this same area which had already been designated for wind power
And
2) existing commercial and recreational fishing activity in and around the region.
In editorial response to these issues, All Our Energy are already on record AGAINST the LNG port for a multitude of reasons. You can find that information here : Stop the LNG Port Off Our Shore from June 2013.
As far as affecting commercial and recreational fishing, check out New Jersey’s “Fisherman’s Energy“, a consortium of fishing interests trying to be the people to bring offshore wind to New Jersey (and may very well bid on this project ). They believe it is not only a “cash crop” for fisherman and right for the future of our energy generation, it would also help fishing as it creates an artificial reef that provides fish with habitat to foster greater abundance of fish. They say :”Fishermen’s Energy is a developer of offshore wind energy projects, founded by New Jersey commercial fishermen to respond to the public’s need to develop the ocean for renewable wind energy. Fishermen’s goal is to turn Atlantic coastal waters into an unmatched source of clean energy, while maintaining a vibrant commercial fishing industry.”
We believe properly sited, with environmental best practices used, through companies committed for the long term, with long term price assurances, this will be the best thing to happen to assure Long Island’s clean energy future.

To coincide with Global Wind Day, I’ve been working with Sierra Club to help bring Offshore Wind to Long Island!
It can now be announced “Wind 100” will be a Long Island-wide event. It starts in Montauk and culminates in a truly grand finale in Long Beach!
To help impact public awareness to the day, the event and the cause, Sierra Club Member Matthew Kearns will be running over 100 miles (WOW !) from Montauk to Long Beach where he will arrive at a huge event for wind power! It is not just a coincidence he will run through town after town that was affected by Superstorm Sandy. He wants to raise awareness that we must switch from dirty fossil fuels, that also fuel climate change, to clean wind energy.
Mr Kearns said his concept is he is running from Montauk, known as “the End” and feels his run represents going from fossil fuels’ “end to a new beginning” in clean energy.

Nassau Legislator David Denenberg started things off saying “we don’t need Port Ambrose (LNG terminal), fracking, or it’s waste near Nassau County.”
Saturday October 19, 2013 about 150 people in Long Beach, NY joined the worldwide global frackdown movement. In hundreds of cities around the world, citizens gathered to try to help put an end to the dangers and hazards of hydrofracking.
Our local edition met on the newly rebuilt Long Beach Boardwalk to stand against fracking and help send a resounding “no” to the proposed Liquified Natural Gas port off our barrier island.

Yes that’s right.. This is proposed right smack dab where the offshore wind farm is supposed to go.
I would think if this goes through, the wind farm won’t because it will become an issue of “navigation”. You know, 1000 foot long, 20 story high ships can’t exctly slalom through the wind turbines like an Olympic event!!
And when you look at it in this light, it is very obvious that this plan could even be an intentional block to the Wind Farm (and others!). Mostly because in and of itself, it doesn’t make a lot of sense right now it is kind of a mystery why we even need it or what the motivation is behind it. They never would have to actually even carry LNG. They could just be claiming the land under the ocean from the wind farms.
Although stopped before, this same Liberty Natural Gas project is now being fast-tracked once again. The race is on because they’re hoping to jam it through while the Long Island South Shore towns are still in disarray after Superstorm Sandy. They rush to do it while anywhere from 10 to 50% of the residents are still displaced from Sandy, rebuilding is going on, and in the MAJORITY OF CASES NOT GOING ON as homeowners fight for their insurance money on a daily basis. A great time while nobody can pay attention to it!

Especially since :
the direct beneficiary of this port’s profits will be an account in the Cayman Islands with no more names, details, or specifics available.[that will be great to deal with when we have to go after somebody for negligence, damaging the environment, blowing up our towns]
… overseas energy markets will benefit from a new access point for U.S. natural gas exports. (Only) Liberty’s 6 permanent employees and 6 consultant companies (none of which are located in New York or New Jersey) will benefit –
wait, I thought we had an abundance of natural gas right here in the US right now and the people in favor if it keep saying how cheap it is. Porponents will say “yes- those imports will help keep prices low.” so why do we need to import more? Why would some company invest in all this infrastructure with gas at such a low price.
They’re going to use this facility to broaden their market through export, which will RAISE prices and increase fracking in our local area. Not a dime will go into our economy, the company says this will employ virtually no one, and all the people of Long Islands South Shore will get is the dangers and risks.

Another unbelievable question not being asked is
Where is the modern pipeline to carry this liquefied concentrated explosive?
Is it already under Long Beach?
Where does the concentrated liquified (un)natural gas go from the buoy?
How about the pipelines that will have to run under our towns, homes, beaches, bays, schools, day care centers, veterans hospitals, flag stores, puppy and kitten shelters etc (okay I might’ve just jumped the shark) 🙂 .
Based on recent and long term history of pipelines and fossil fuel companies, it cannot be trusted.
Especially in a “here-we-go-again, back door deal trying to slip it by, while good people aren’t looking”, kind of way. Especially as those good people clean up and try to restore their lives after a major disaster.
None of these companies is interested in the common good, only dollars.
No one in government is standing in their way and no one is punishing them when they f¥€% us up!
Good people are the only thing standing against them.
The reality is WE need to protect ourselves because no one else is.

A beautiful day it was, so we got out, taking in the offerings at yesterday’s third annual Greenfest
First, and much to my surprise we were greeted at the entrance by Robert and Barry From Solar Windependence

and their out-front-and-center, attention-grabbing display of the much talked about Honeywell Windtronics WT6500 wind turbine.
Groundbreaking and Controversial for the very same reason… It attempts to bring affordable wind power generation in an easier to install unit that achieves the enviable (or questionable) task of rooftop wind(do your own research on that!). Also interesting is the electricity is generated in the outside at the blade tips, as they go around the outer edge instead of at the hub. For the moment, we’re going to defer on wether we like it or not, until we see it in action. Thankfully, Solar Windependence have a number of installations lined up that we can (hopefully) track output and usability issues that have made this unit such a hot topic. We will be checking up on that progress at a later date.
We met the guys from new Long Beach business concept Deco Bike.

Another controversial (see Sea By The City) new business with a modern and green concept: they’ll be setting up 13 kiosks in town. You may rent a bike at any of those kiosks and return it at any other, saving gas, taxi trips, traffic congestion and the worry of locking up a bike while you visit the beach, shop, get your car fixed(ha), eat a great meal at one of the local restaurants or whatever.
learning about their free home energy audit, which will yield you a list of solutions from weatherproofing to solar panels to change the way you use energy… In many instances at no cost to you after rebates and energy savings.
We couldn’t help but admire the cool bikes Max from Local Cycles (516.390.7085) had with him.

He offered a test drive, but I declined. I said something about wanting to stay on task..maybe next time, but that sure would’ve been a great distraction!
Finally we caught up with EmPower Solar who we’ve met before.

We spoke to David Schieren about a host of issues including the recent decision to add 33% tariffs to Chinese manufactured solar panels.
He said it is basically bad for the whole industry, but at the same time, the slack on the lower prices will be made up by Malaysian, Indian and other manufacturers.
When told we’re one of EmPower’s tweeps, he said we’re the first he’s met in person!
We spoke briefly about their involvement with installing the 100kw turbine, solar panels and e/v charging stations for the Town of Hempstead at the town’s Clean Energy Project at Point Lookout.
All in all a great day talking with some very interesting people. Too bad, one of the people we were hoping to meet, Joe Sinonna, Long Beach real estate entrepreneur, green advocate and organizer of Greenfest didn’t cross our path. Hope to meet him another time.
