State of the State

So-so State Of The State.
Yes, we have proposed deadlines for procurement of offshore wind, likely off Long Beach for 2018, and 2019. These are just PROPOSALS so don’t get too excited. Pressure and public support will still be needed to make this a reality, as NY does not have a good track record on delivering what is promised in the already too long time frame given.
Overall, it honestly could be much better and we honestly need much better. We will continue to push for more, faster, and to stop any disastrous investments in fossil fuels our children will be saddled with the financial and climate costs for.

The good news is yes- we CAN do something about all these issues, you can help be the change. We are making huge strides in cleaning up our towns and waterways and helping everyday people become better aware of environmental issues and become involved in them, on our reusable bag campaigns, which are succeeding in making change.

Please get involved with our campaigns and make your voice heard. You can volunteer to help here.

Point Lookout Wind Turbine Visit June 10, 2017

visit

It aint godzilla, it’s the Point Lookout wind turbine….

After we went to the LIPA Board of Trustees to push for off shore wind with our allies, some of our volunteers visited the Town Of Hempstead Energy Park, to check out their 156 ft tall, 100kw wind turbine that makes enough power for 80  homes, plus their 100kw solar farm and their hydrogen energy storage system.  What an interesting day, thanks to Tara Schneider-Moran at Town of Hempstead. We will be keeping in touch and will return again.

LIPA Board of Trustees Meeting May 2017

LIPA

We had a busy week. After our strong group meeting, we went to the LIPA Board of Trustees to push for off shore wind with our allies. We told them we support them in fulfilling their legal obligation to purchase 400 Megawatts of renewables by 2018, of which only 190 have been filled since 2014, and that time is running out. We believe they are listening and with your help, will continue to support them to honor that obligation.

Save the date and time! One month from today!
Exact location in the Long Beach Area to be announced.

Our friend Matthew Kearns is running 100 + miles to bring attention to the growing need for and easy availability of Offshore Wind power here on Long Island.

You and I will be there to turn that attention to help Governor Cuomo understand we support moving to offshore wind NOW and help him act on offshore wind power.

Matt is running 100 miles. If you support renewable energy and offshore wind power for Long Island, the least you can do is put aside a couple hours to attend this event.

December 18, 2013, Hauppague NY. Today, Sierra Club and New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG), amongst other supporters, delivered the 12,944 signatures they received to the Long Island office of Governor Andrew Cuomo, calling on the governor to expand and support wind energy in New York.

“This outpouring of public support for wind power demonstrates that New Yorkers are ready for Governor Cuomo to make our state a national wind power leader,” said Sierra Club Organizer David Alicea. “Governor Cuomo can lead us into the 21st century by making a strong commitment on wind energy that will boost our economy, create jobs, and clean up our air.”
