Enough Offshore Wind To Power the World

Another cool map that shows what it would take to turn the entire world’s energy supply to just offshore wind.

Greenfest at Long Beach, NY

A beautiful day it was, so we got out, taking in the offerings at yesterday’s third annual Greenfest

First, and much to my surprise we were greeted at the entrance by Robert and Barry From Solar Windependence

and their out-front-and-center, attention-grabbing display of the much talked about Honeywell Windtronics WT6500 wind turbine.
Groundbreaking and Controversial for the very same reason… It attempts to bring affordable wind power generation in an easier to install unit that achieves the enviable (or questionable) task of rooftop wind(do your own research on that!). Also interesting is the electricity is generated in the outside at the blade tips, as they go around the outer edge instead of at the hub. For the moment, we’re going to defer on wether we like it or not, until we see it in action. Thankfully, Solar Windependence have a number of installations lined up that we can (hopefully) track output and usability issues that have made this unit such a hot topic. We will be checking up on that progress at a later date.

We met the guys from new Long Beach business concept Deco Bike.

Another controversial (see Sea By The City) new business with a modern and green concept: they’ll be setting up 13 kiosks in town. You may rent a bike at any of those kiosks and return it at any other, saving gas, taxi trips, traffic congestion and the worry of locking up a bike while you visit the beach, shop, get your car fixed(ha), eat a great meal at one of the local restaurants or whatever.

We spent a few minutes with Dennis Meyers of Home Star Energy Service

learning about their free home energy audit, which will yield you a list of solutions from weatherproofing to solar panels to change the way you use energy… In many instances at no cost to you after rebates and energy savings.

We couldn’t help but admire the cool bikes Max from Local Cycles (516.390.7085) had with him.

He offered a test drive, but I declined. I said something about wanting to stay on task..maybe next time, but that sure would’ve been a great distraction!

Finally we caught up with EmPower Solar who we’ve met before.

Empower Solar at Greenfest

Darren and Chris from Empower Solar at Greenfest

We spoke to David Schieren about a host of issues including the recent decision to add 33% tariffs to Chinese manufactured solar panels.
He said it is basically bad for the whole industry, but at the same time, the slack on the lower prices will be made up by Malaysian, Indian and other manufacturers.

When told we’re one of EmPower’s tweeps, he said we’re the first he’s met in person!

We spoke briefly about their involvement with installing the 100kw turbine, solar panels and e/v charging stations for the Town of Hempstead at the town’s Clean Energy Project at Point Lookout.

We also briefly visited other displays from Greener Country,
And Long Beach Kayaks, amongst others there for the day.

All in all a great day talking with some very interesting people. Too bad, one of the people we were hoping to meet, Joe Sinonna, Long Beach real estate entrepreneur, green advocate and organizer of Greenfest didn’t cross our path. Hope to meet him another time.
Were you there? What did you think?

Vestas Reaches 50 Gigawatts Wind Capacity

Congratulations to wind turbine manufacturer Vestas on their remarkable milestone of 50 Gigawatts wind generation capacity installed to date, reached in the first quarter this year.

The threshold was passed in the first quarter of 2012, with the completion of the Knäred wind project in Laholm Municipality in Southern Sweden. Knäred is a 20MW project from Vestas key account E.ON, and features 10 V90-2.0MW turbines which provide enough energy for approximately 10,000 Swedish households

Fifty GW amounts to more than 46,000 turbines, close to a fifth of total global capacity, and generates enough clean energy to power 19 million European households, saving the world from 55 million tonnes of CO2 emissions every year.

Congratulations to Vestas!

Vestas do say they had a little help…

Reaching 50GW has only been possible through the commitment and vision Vestas employees has shown in collaboration with our customers, suppliers and investors over the last 30 years.

Plus European public policies and citizenry demand for clean energy that acknowledge the costs of pollution, has helped create level playing fields for renewable energy, also hasn’t hurt.

Windmade: The Live Event

Ok, so- no, it’s not an actual event, but the launch of the concept surely is to us here at All Our Energy.

20120412-085657.jpg

As a follow up to our previous post Windmade: Change You Select, the European (EWEA) Wind Energy Association are putting forth a new concept: make your event Windmade.

The Windmade concept is an alternative driver to not only create a market for, but to help make available wind-powered electricity. They market to manufacturers who can then label amd market their goods as “Windmade” also letting the public choose to purchase products made with true clean energy (and by rights implying the consumer should consider how other products are made). We really like both ideas.

EWEA is showing how it’s done at their own “EWEA 2012” annual conference in Copenhagen, Denmark. All the electricity used will be purchased and used specifically for the event What better place than the world’s leading country for wind turbine manufacturing, community owned wind projects, and

Energy Island: How one community harnessed the wind and changed their world by Allan Drummond

We believe the answer to expanding renewable energy is in getting the public involved and aware of renewable energy and help give them access to it, and this project wins on both fronts.

Just imagine… And let us know:
What else could be Windmade?

Care To See the Wind?

Check out this new map from Hint.fm which artfully shows the living wind around us.

Always said in the renewables community: “if the public could just see the pollution in the air from fossil fuels, we would have full scale renewable energy tomorrow”.

I also think, “If they could only see the invisible power of the wind, just waiting to be harnessed, it could spark public interest; the imaginations of young and old alike, and demonstrate what awaits if we just act and demand wind energy.”

What a beautiful depiction of the resource in a way that serves as a great beginning toward better awareness of what is… and what could be.

If we would all just care to see the wind.

Point Lookout Wind Turbine Update

Point Lookout- Thursday night’s very heavily attended Point Lookout Civic Association (PLCA) meeting, the first public forum since the “not-so-widely-publicized-in-advance” installation of our new local landmark 100 kw wind turbine was put up, looked set to be a must-go event, and it was.

Up to speak was Town of Hempstead Department of Conservation and Waterways Commissioner, Ron Masters.

Very Important Stories Right Now

So much to talk about… So little time.

Just because this forum has been silent doesn’t mean our waters don’t run deep!

Before February gets completely away, its time to take a moment and tack up some important stories in renewable energy here.

Obviously the big stories are out there but ones we’re most interested in are: » Read more..

Ok locals.

We have the subject in our backyards here in Point Lookout.

I’ve seen some great shots out there already.

We have a phenomenal backdrop, as well.

Here’s how to enter the Global Wind Day photo contest.

Let me know how you do!

Talking More Wind Power at Point Lookout

Referring to an excellent pictorial from Shaun at Sea By the City, there’s quite a few questions flying around. I see an opportunity to help people who favor renewable energy get more involved through gaining knowledge: one of All Our Energy’s main goals.

A great comment:

Why only ONE turbine?

There’s plenty of room for unobtrusively placing a couple more. Any talk of one or two more?

I don’t know. Let’s talk about it!
